1-Dimensional Mixed Layer Model

or

Single Column Model

TOMS can be configured as a 1-dimensional mixed layer model. Below is a time-depth plot of a 1 year integration of a 6 layer single column model. The vectors indicate strength and direction of the flow in each layer. Upward pointing vectors is northward flow, vectors pointing right is eastward flow.

The following shows the layer thickness variations layer thickness variations

while the temperature is varying as

Note that all layers have the same temperature during the winter. During that time, the model is essentially a z-coordinate model. Also note that the shallowest mixed layer depth occurs before the maximum mixed layer temperature as expected from Monin-Obukov theory.
