Hurricane Simulation

This is a very intense West Pacific typhoon appearing in the control simulation conducted with the GFDL SKYHI General Circulation Model with high (1/3 degree) horizontal resolution. Shown in black are the surface pressure contours with 10 mb contour interval from 910 mb in the center to 1000 mb on the periphery of the storm. The blue arrows represent the lowest model level winds and the longest vector shown corresponds to 70.5 m/sec (~140 knots). Shown in red is the rainfall rate with a 5 cm/day contour interval. The latitude-longitude grid is drawn at two-degree intervals and the storm center is located near (24N, 130E). The date shown is July 16.
