Scope
and participation
The objective of this workshop
is to synthesize knowledge on the physics of three main phenomena of
multidecadal-to-centennial climate variability: the Atlantic
Multidecadal Oscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and
Pan-oceanic connections. Our main questions are:
- What are the different
physical mechanisms suggested for the variability observed?
- How can we design (GCM)
model experiments to falsify these mechanisms?
- What factors affect
predictability of these phenomena of climate variability?
Invited presentations will provide overviews of observational, modeling
as well as theoretical aspects of this variability. This provides an
evaluation of what theories have been suggested based on idealized
models, GCMs and observations. Additional presentations by postdocs and
Ph.D. students will address recent developments. Next, there will be an
extensive discussion what future modeling work, data analyses and
theoretical studies are needed to falsify these theories. At the end of
each day, a synthesis will be given on the state of knowledge of each
particular topic. The output of
this workshop will consist of a synthesis report of each of the three
topics discussed during the meeting.
There are funds available for postdoctoral associates and Ph.D.
stundents to attend the workshop.
