The Hawaii Ocean Observing System

ABSTRACT

In October 2007, SOEST was awarded a grant to establish a regional ocean observing system for Hawaii. HIOOS, the Hawaii Integrated Ocean Observing System, is a sub regional component of the National Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) and has an initial focus on the south shore of Oahu. The system is designed around several component groups, each providing specific measurements of the near-shore ocean environment. In this presentation the component groups will be described with a special emphasis on the data streams that comprise the observing system. The present challenge, and the focus of on-going and future efforts, is to integrate the data streams into end-user products. Some examples of these data products, including web-based map viewers, will be demonstrated.
