Coupled Modeling of Air-sea Interaction in the Indian Ocean during an MJO

ABSTRACT

Application of a fully coupled atmosphere-ocean-wave modeling system (COAMPS) to the March-April 2009 onset of the MJO is discussed. Compared to global models such as the Navy Operational Global Atmosphere Prediction System (NOGAPS) for the atmosphere and the Global Navy Coastal Ocean Model (G-NCOM) for the ocean, agreement with observation is significantly improved. The coupled system will be used for real time forecasts for the international DYNAMO experiment in the Indian Ocean in the fall of 2011.
