Generation of meso-scale eddies in the Southern Indian Ocean

ABSTRACT

The Leeuwin Current (LC) system off the coast of western Australia is known as a region of strong meso-scale eddy activity among the midlatitude eastern boundary current systems. While distributions of eddies and eddy kinetic energy (EKE) are described in several literatures, detailed mechanisms of eddy generation and decay processes in this region have not been clarified yet. Here, we analyse energy conversions between eddy field and mean flow, for better understanding of the mechanisms.
